untitled-aug26_15-39-34
Mid Century Blackbean Sideboard by Schulim Krimper - Refinished

Exceptional Australian Mid-Century sideboard, attributed to renowned Melbourne furniture designer and master cabinetmaker Schulim Krimper, circa 1950s.

Krimper was one of Australia's most significant post-war furniture makers, recognised for his custom-made furniture, exceptional cabinetmaking and sculptural approach to functional details. His work frequently celebrated the natural beauty of timber, with handles, joinery and construction forming an integral part of the design. Examples of his furniture are held in major Australian institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and QAGOMA.

This beautiful piece is made from high-end Queensland Blackbean Timber. Featuring three woven original cane-front drawers with long sculpted timber handles, above three generous cupboards. The cabinet stands on original exceptionally fine tapered timber legs finished with metal ferrules, complemented by gently sculpted edges and beautifully figured timber throughout.

The quality of the cabinetry is particularly impressive, with veneered doors finished to both sides, long brass hinges, quality internal construction and carefully considered detailing throughout. These pieces are known for their “museum-quality” materials and joinery.

The craftsmanship, organic detailing and sculptural treatment of functional elements share characteristics with documented Krimper furniture. However, the piece carries no maker's mark and currently has no documented provenance; it has therefore been conservatively catalogued as attributed to Schulim Krimper, rather than definitively by the designer.

The piece has been carefully refinished and colour corrected by our team, then finished with Osmo Hardwax Oil to protect and enhance the natural timber grain. Veneer repairs have been completed to the rear vertical edges of both the left and right-hand side panels, including repairs around the upper and lower rear corners. These are predominantly visible from the rear and side of the piece and do not detract from its overall presentation. Light signs of age and minor imperfections remain, consistent with its vintage.

A rare and beautifully executed example of Australian post-war modernist furniture.

Dimensions184w x 47d x 86.5h

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0795/5211/9082/files/DSC-2231_b11e76f1-74a3-4582-b190-89d121c5620c.jpg?v=1787782984
